Oct. 17th, 2010 02:54 pmToday was the first day in about two weeks that I left the apartment and didn't nearly get hit twice by cars between leaving and returning. Honestly, the way people drive in this city is appalling, and usually at least once a day there's a car that turns a corner without looking for pedestrians, or turns while I'm crossing (at the crosswalk, and when the light says I'm fine to go) and so tries to climb up my ass because the driver evidently can't wait 10 seconds for me to get off the road. I ought to start carrying a little notebook with me so that I can write down all the license plate numbers of these people, but I think the police department would be sick of me emailing them before a week's out.
They aren't even always doing something illegal. Just irresponsible and potentially dangerous. And inconsiderate. When Rei and I took a trip to Dartmouth a couple of years ago, we were amazed when we stopped at a crosswalk to cross a street, and the bus going one way and a motorcycle going the other both stopped to let us cross before we'd even been there for half a minute. Here, unless there's a traffic light to make them stop, we're normally waiting a few minutes before we can cross anywhere, and sometimes it has to be a mad dash across when there's a break in cars for a moment. Very few people actually stop to let pedestrians cross.
This incident in Dartmouth impressed both of us to the point where we still mention it, even if it's been a few years now since it happened.
But I'll bet you anything that the reason we didn't nearly get hit today was because we were out at 9:30 on a Sunday morning. Few people out and about on the roads at all.
But whatever the reason, it was a welcome change of pace.
We came home and gave poor Nick-kitty a bath. We've had problems with fleas lately, and when I say "we", I mean all of us. Nick has them worst of all, but my legs are covered in bites, and there isn't much we can do since we don't have a vacuum cleaner and any laundry that gets done has to be done at somebody else's place, since we don't have a washer or dryer here. We're doing the best we can, though. Both cats were treated with flea spray, but Nick's been so itchy that we decided to take the plunge and bathe him. He didn't much like it, and I got a few claws in my skin for my efforts, but he came out with less crud in his fur and a few drowned fleas doing down the drain. It was worth the hassle.
Jakob-kitty will be bathed tomorrow, but he doesn't have as many problems with fleas as Nick does. Nor does Rei have them as bad as me. Fleas must like the fat ones, I guess. But we're keeping ourselves as bite-free as possible by rubbing vinegar on our skin and eating garlic until we can get a lot of clothes and bedding washed properly. So we go to bed after annointing outselves for the sacred Fish and Chips ritual, but at least we don't wake up with more bites, so it's a good trade.
Rei's about 1 boss fight away from beating Ocarina of Time, which I'm hoping he does today. I ought to get back to the various games I'm playing, but I've been on a reading kick again lately, so books are sucking up my soul for now.
Looking forward to this coming week, though, when I do a lot of baking. Baking supplies are on special at the grocery store, and bags of certain kinds of apples and buy-one-get-one-free, so I have the feeling some apple pies are in my future!
