sarasvatiIt's Rei's birthday today! Celebrate!
My goodness, yesterday couldn't have gotten any better! After the morning's smug start, we decided to go to the local nature park, just to look out over the ocean, and then we decided to take a little walk down some of the trails.
First of all, we saw a juvenile squirrel, probably a female, who was very close to us and nibbling away at seeds on a tree. She watched us for a little while, and then we walked back along the trail since it was running out. As we went, suddenly Rei stopped us and whispered excitedly, "Fox!"
Yes, there was a wild fox trotting across the trail and into the woods. It stayed within sight of us for a good five minutes, just trotting along and looking at us every once in a while. It was amazing; I've never seen a fox outside of a zoo or pictures before, and I cried from delight, it was so wonderful to see.
Later on, we saw a little bird that looked like a finch of some kind with black and orange and white markings, that flitted from branch to branch. Even further along the trail we actually saw a porcupine up in a tree, eating whatever it is porcupines eat. It was huge, dark, and I saw a glimpse of its quills and a face that looked like an overgrown groundhog. It too was amazing, and was another animal I'd never seen in the wild before.
After another squirrel, bigger and not as bold as the first one, we saw a pair of chickadees so close to us they could almost be touched. They must be somewhat tame, since even though we didn't have any seeds to tempt them, just holding out a hand made them hop over and perch on our fingers for a moment, tiny claws and weighing almost nothing.
It was a beautiful day, and I don't think I'd trade those memories for anything.
And since it's Rei's birthday, we're taking a trip to Cass's for a day of delicious food and gaming. Normally I don't like spending entire days there, since I'm not that social sometimes even around friends, but for Rei I can handle it.
