Nature is a wondrous thing.
Jul. 29th, 2010 12:53 amAfter doing a bit of research, it seems that the two birds that Rei and I saw the other day were, in fact, a pair of common nighthawks. Which, despite their name, are actually threatened birds in Canada. According to the website I just linked to, they haven't bred in this province in years.
I can't guarantee that they bred here, of course, but the fact that they were seen here is noteworthy enough, at least to me. I've never seen them before, and believe me, I'd notice. At first I thought they were bats, from the way they were flying, but then when we got a good look they were revealed to be birds, with white stripes under their wings that was clear as they flapped about and dove and did all manner of arial acrobatics.
I hope I can see them again. They were fun to watch, and I'm glad I got the chance to see them at least once in my life. They're not so rare that I probably couldn't see them again, if I looked hard enough, but as I'm not a birdwatcher, I consider this a pretty lucky experience.
