Yesterday I got a call from my landlord, saying that a building tax inspector wanted to drop by today, so that was my 24 hours' notice. Fine, dandy, except the apartment was an effing sty and needed serious work!

So I spent yesterday, my birthday, cleaning my little butt off, throwing out garbage and washing things and stuffing things into boxes until Rei got home from work. Then I did it all again today, because I had until 3 PM and was determined to clean as much as possible.

The place isn't what it ought to be, in terms of cleanliness and neatness, but it's a lot better than it used to be, and given the short period of time in which I blitzed the place, I'm pretty gosh darn proud of myself.

Even if I ache in places I didn't even know could ache.

What's more is that I did all this on minimal food and drink, and less sleep than I normally get. I'm going to sleep like the dead tonight, I swear! And I'm going to enjoy every unconscious second it it.

I did, thankfully, address with the tax inspector that the room is the back of the apartment is not a second bedroom no matter what the landlord says. The room is uninsulated, and while that may be fine in the summer months, when the temperature outide dips to -30 Celsius in the winter, not even the old electric baseboard heater can warm that place up to a degree that's remotely comfortable. At best I can prevent my toes from going numb in there after half an hour. So for about half or more of the year, that room is not one that can be used as a bedroom, and I told her so. Whether or not the landlord was annoyed at my honesty, I can't say. Probably pleased, really, since I imagine he's taxed less on a 1-bedroom apartment than on a 2-bedroom.

But I'm putting all that out of my mind now, and returning to my reading, which has been sorely neglected over the past few days. One benefit that came from all the cleaning was the discovery of many books I'd forgotten I owned, so reading through a newly-exploded "To Read" pile is going to take up plenty of my time.
