Hell, the bizarro-world treatment of sheltered pretty men and strong protective women isn't even the only way to go. Why aren't there more societies, for instance, that allow a woman to do something other than have a family? So many cultures in real life value sons more than daughters for reasons like that, so it would be easy to justify letting women have that choice.
